Privacy

Here is everything we keep, grouped by where it comes from.

• Your account: a display name, an email address, and a password. We store the password in a scrambled form, so we cannot read it.
• What you post: questions, answers, reviews, photos, and messages you send to other members.
• Your area: the neighbourhood or town you pick when you join. If you turn on location, we also get a rough position from your device so we can show what is close to you. You can turn this off at any time.
• How you use the site: which pages you open, what you search for, the browser and device you use, and your IP address. This helps us fix bugs and spot spam.
• Anything you send us: reports, feedback, and messages to support.

We use your information to:

• Run the site and show you shops, places, events, and questions near you.
• Show your name and area next to the things you post, so people know a real person wrote them.
• Keep the site honest. We look for fake reviews, spam, and accounts that break the rules.
• Send you emails about your account, replies to your questions, and things you asked to hear about. You can switch off the optional ones.
• Understand what works and what does not, so we can make the site better.

We do not sell your data. We do not show you ads based on your private messages.

Some things are public by design. Other things stay private.

• Public: your display name, your area, and everything you post as a question, answer, or review.
• Private: your email address, your password, your exact location, your private messages, and your reports about other members.

Search engines can find public posts. Think about that before you write something you would not want a stranger to read.

We share data only when we have to, and only as much as needed.

• Companies that help us run the site, such as hosting, email delivery, and error tracking. They can only use the data to do that job for us.
• The police or a court, if the law requires it and the request is valid.
• A new owner, if the site is ever sold or merged. We would tell you first.

We use a small number of cookies. One keeps you logged in. One remembers your settings, like your area. We also use a basic, privacy-friendly counter to see which pages people visit. We do not use tracking cookies from ad networks.

You can block cookies in your browser. If you do, you will need to log in each time you visit.

We keep your data for as long as you have an account. If you delete your account, we remove your profile, email, and private messages within 30 days.

Questions and answers stay up so the thread still makes sense for others, but your name is replaced with "Former member". If you would rather they were removed too, tell us when you delete your account.

Server logs are kept for 90 days and then deleted.

You are in charge of your data. You can:

• See and change your details from your account settings.
• Download a copy of everything you have posted.
• Turn location off, in the app or in your device settings.
• Unsubscribe from optional emails using the link at the bottom of each one.
• Delete your account. This cannot be undone.

You need to be at least 16 to use isthislegit.chat. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone younger. If you think a child has made an account, tell us and we will remove it.

We use encryption when data travels between you and us, and we limit who on our side can see personal information. No system is perfect. If we ever find that your data has been exposed, we will tell you as soon as we can and explain what happened.

If we change how we handle your data, we will update this page and change the date at the top. For big changes we will also email you or show a notice on the site.
